Despite its wonderfully secluded feel, Jura is easier to reach than many visitors expect, with several scenic travel options by sea and air.
Travelling to Jura by car is straightforward and scenic. The most popular route is to take the CalMac ferry from Kennacraig on the Kintyre peninsula to Port Askaig on Islay, a crossing of around 1 hour 55 minutes, before continuing on the short onward ferry across the Sound of Islay to Feolin on Jura. This is the easiest option if you want the freedom of having your own car on the island, and it combines a beautiful west coast drive with two memorable sea crossings.
For foot passengers, the seasonal passenger ferry from Tayvallich offers a particularly appealing way to arrive. This direct sailing reaches Craighouse on Jura in about 50 minutes and runs during the main visitor season, making it a simple and enjoyable route from the mainland straight into the heart of island life. It is an excellent choice for guests travelling without a car who want a relaxed, scenic journey and an easy arrival close to local shops, the distillery and village amenities.
If you are travelling from farther afield, another convenient option is to fly from Glasgow to Islay. From Islay Airport, you can take a local bus or taxi to Port Askaig, then catch the regular short ferry across to Jura. Flying is the quickest way to reach the islands, and although it involves a connection, it can make Jura surprisingly accessible for visitors coming from elsewhere in the UK or beyond.
